Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies (FTSS)

Starting from the 2025/26 Academic Year, the Education Bureau (EDB) has launched the Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies (FTSS)* to attract meritorious local students to pursue further studies in areas of strategic priority for the development of Hong Kong. 

The University adopts merit-based approach in selecting the most outstanding local students pursuing designated TPg programmes to receive the scholarships, taking into account their readiness and ability to contribute significantly to the development of Hong Kong after graduation. Applicants will be required to submit personal statements on how they would contribute to the priority areas of Hong Kong after completing the programme concerned (the personal statements) and their commitment to join the relevant industries or sectors and stay in Hong Kong or the Greater Bay Area upon graduation will be considered.

The maximum amount of scholarship will be $100,000 per eligible student for the entire programme, regardless of the actual study period of the programme and mode of study. The scholarship will be disbursed as a one-off payment upon the student's successful graduation and attainment of satisfactory academic results. 

Local students^ admitted to the following programmes in the 2025/26 Academic Year are eligible to apply for the scholarship: 

  1. Master of Science in Game Development and Management
  2. Master of Social Work
  3. Master of Social Sciences in Play Therapy
  4. Master of Social Sciences in Counselling Psychology
  5. Master of Social Sciences in Adversity and Trauma Psychology
  6. Master of Social Sciences in Psychology

*Students awarded other government scholarships, including the Continuing Education Fund, will not be eligible to apply for the FTSS. 
^Students holding the following documents issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR are non-local students and will NOT be considered for the scholarship: (a) student visa/entry permit; (b) visa/entry permit under the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates; or (c) dependant visa/entry permit who were 18 years old or above when they were issued with such visa/entry permit by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR.

Postgraduate Studentships for Research Postgraduate Students

Maximum of HK$720,000 in total for full-time PhD programmes, and HK$360,000 for full-time MPhil programmes during normative study period.

The job duties of studentship recipients may include teaching and research assistant. The maximum working hours will be 12 hours per week.

Priority will be given to students who have greater financial needs. If the student withdraws from study or changes to part-time mode, he/she will no longer be eligible for any future disbursements of the Studentship.

HKSYU reserves the right to determine the student's eligibility for the Studentship.

TML Scholarship for Research Postgraduate Students

Starting from Academic Year 2023/24, the TML Scholarship will be targeted at providing funding support to conduct thesis and related research of full-time MPhil/PhD students. Full-time students are eligible to apply for the TML scholarship provided that their thesis proposal and final thesis are approved by the Thesis Assessment Committee within the normative period of study. For MPhil students, up to HK$60,000 will be awarded (HK$40,000 to be disbursed after thesis proposal and HK$20,000 upon thesis submission or at the end of Year 2). For PhD students, up to HK$90,000 will be awarded (HK$60,000 to be disbursed after thesis proposal and HK$30,000 upon thesis submission or at the end of Year 3).

Priority will be given to students who have greater financial needs. If the student withdraws from study or changes to part-time mode, he/she will no longer be eligible for any future disbursements of the Scholarship.

HKSYU reserves the right to determine the student’s eligibility for the Scholarship.

Student Financial Assistance and Scholarships (For All Postgraduate Programmes)

Student can apply for financial assistance in the form of a government tuition fee loan, under the "Extended Non-means-tested Loan Scheme" (ENLS) adminstered by the Working Family and Student Financial Assistance Agency.

A limited number of scholarships are awarded to students with outstanding academic performance who are nominated by academic departments. A Postgraduate Scholarship award was established by the University in 2010/11. All the local and non-local full-time students are eligible to apply for the annual scholarships via the Office of Students Affairs (OSA) normally between February and March, after the academic result of the first semester has been released. Other scholarship opportunities available to postgraduate applicants include the Postgraduate Scholarships awarded by the Hong Kong Association of University Women.
