Research Postgraduate Programmes
MPhil Programmes
For the MPhil programme, the applicant shall have:
  • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honour no lower than Second Class; or 
  • graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than B; and
  • IELTS (academic) results not lower than 6.5. Exemptions from this requirement may be granted to applicants with degrees awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction and assessment is English. IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date.

Applications for exemption from the admission requirements shall be considered on a case-by-case basis for both MPhil and PhD programmes.
PhD Programmes
For PhD programme, the applicant shall have:
  • obtained an MPhil or a taught master's degree; or
  • graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with First Class honours; or 
  • enrolled in an MPhil Programme in the University and requested transfer to PhD programme; and 
  • IELTS (academic) results not lower than 6.5. Exemptions from this requirement may be granted to applicants with degrees awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction and assessment is English. IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date.
Applications for exemption from the admission requirements shall be considered on a case-by-case basis for both MPhil and PhD programmes.
 
Applicants with a taught master's degree shall also have graduated from a recognized university with excellent grades and good recommendations from the University. It is also highly preferable that their taught master's degree should be related to their chosen field of study in the proposed programme.
 
Applicants must satisfy other programme-specific entrance requirements, if any, stipulated by individual departments.
 

 

Taught Master/Doctoral Programmes
Taught Master Programmes

An applicant for admission to the taught postgraduate programmes shall normally:

  • hold a relevant bachelor's degree with first or second class honours from a Hong Kong University; or 
  • have obtained an equivalent qualification from an institution recognized for this purpose by the University.
  • Applicants must satisfy other programme-specific entrance requirements, if any, stipulated for individual programmes.
Applicants with entrance qualifications from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfil the following minimum English proficiency requirement:
 
(a) overall score 6.0 in IELTS with no subtest score lower than 5.5
(b) score 550 (Paper-based test) or 80 (Internet-based test) in TOEFL
(c) Other equivalent qualifications acceptable to the University. 
 
IELTS and TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date. Individual programmes may specify English proficiency requirements that exceed the minimum described above. 
Doctor of Psychology in Counselling Psychology

Applicants shall normally:

  • possess a Bachelor’s degree or a postgraduate conversion degree in Psychology from a recognized local or overseas university;
  • possess a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology#, Clinical Psychology# or Counselling* from a recognized local or overseas university;
  • have earned a GPA of 3.3 or above, or its equivalent, from the aforementioned programmes of study; and
  • be currently registered or be eligible to register with the Hong Kong Psychological Society (HKPS) as a Counselling or Clinical Psychologist.
# Applicants with a Master degree in Counselling Psychology and Clinical Psychology will be required to complete 60 credits (equivalent to total 240 QF credits and 2400 notional learning hours) before graduation.
 
* Applicants without a Master's degree recognized by the Division of Counselling Psychology (DCoP) of the HKPS must have completed at least one year of supervised post qualification experience in counselling practice after obtaining the Master’s degree in Counselling. They will be required to complete the following courses to fulfil the membership requirement of DCoP: a) CP615 Clinical Practice IV and b) three courses (a total of 9 credits) at Master’s level offered by the University related to assessment, psychotherapy and counselling psychology practice (i.e., CP519 Assessment & Evaluation for Counselling Psychology I, CP522 Professional Practice and Ethical Issues in Counselling Psychology, and one Clinical Practicum/Seminar course). Students are required to pay the additional credit fees. The courses required will be decided on a case-by-case basis. The maximum number of credits required is 75.
